You all know I do not have a hard time posting about personal stuff as you’ve seen me talk about my poop.  This is another one of those blog posts that falls under TMI. Just a heads up!

You may remember back to an earlier post that over the past several years in addition to going vegan I’ve also been working on removing toxins/chemicals from my life. I’ve also been focused on being more eco-friendly.  For instance we no longer use paper towels in our house. I’ve also dabbled in making my own laundry detergent (Wasn’t 100% crazy about the outcome, so that’s a work in progress).

An idea I’ve pushed around from the get-go is trying to find a replacement for my current tampon.  I’ve priced the options many of times and always ended up back to the idea of trying out a Diva Cup.  You may ask what a Diva Cup is.  Well, it’s a non-absorbent menstrual cup made of silicone that catches your “flow”.  You simply remove, wash, and replace.  I know this may seem gross to some.  Meh.  Not to me. Personally I think the trade-offs are worth it.

I’ll save money by reusing it and I’ll also be more “green” instead of continually disposes of tampons or pads into landfills.  Not to mention most people don’t know about the additives that are in personal hygiene products.  If they did they may not want to use them either.  I got this from the Diva Cup website and find the stats pretty powerful:

For argument’s sake, let’s pick the figure of 4 tampons/pads per day, for 5 days.  That’s 20 disposable products per cycle. Twelve cycles per year equals 240 tampons/pads per year. Okay, now if you menstruate for 41 years…that’s close to 10,000 tampons/pads you’ll use in your lifetime!

After discussing the idea of the Diva Cup with Laura, she gave me the confidence and boost to order one.  I will never wish my period to come early but will admit that I’m anxious to try this little device.  And surely you won’t be surprised that I’ll let you know when the time comes!!

Has you used one of these? If so, any helpful hints?

Keep Smiling and Be Grateful =)

PS Speaking about divas, did you know that it’s Ms. Kelly Olexa’s Birthday?  Say what?!  Tis true.  Make sure you holler Happy Birthday to her on Twitter or YouTube!!  She rocks.
