Arizona Adventure – 3 Month Update

9

It’s been 3 months since we took off on our Arizona Adventure. If you’ve been following me here along with Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter you pretty much know how things are going but I figured I’d give you an “official” update and share with you some random things we’ve found out along the way.

Holy sand storms.  It may sound crazy but I had no idea about sand storms until we received an alert the first day we arrived.  It never entered my mind.  For the first month we had warnings almost everyday and sure enough we had a sand storm everyday.  The weird thing is these sand storms arrive about the same time everyday, which is mid afternoon.  I guess this has to do with atmospheric pressures. As for the flash flood watches, ha!  I laugh because we never see rain.  I’m not trying to make light of flash floods because indeed, they do occur.  However, during our time here I believe we’ve seen rain twice.  Not complaining about that.  I’m loving the sunshine.  The sunsets and night time skies are the best I’ve ever seen.

The snowbirds have started to land.  From my understanding they take over much of our area.  Guess we will see how that goes and time our visits to the store and eating out accordingly.

In no way does it feel like October.  Blame it on the weather or our whirlwind of the past few months.  It’s crazy to think that we’ve got to start Christmas shopping soon!

The animals seem indifferent to the heat. I thought they’d love it but that’s not the case.  Now that it’s cooled down a bit they are enjoying the weather even more and I’m sure they’ll appreciate it through the winter.

Allergy season exists out here too. We’ve experienced this first hand with Jax asthma.  Come to find out my co-worker’s child also started with allergy issues at the same time. Over the past month Jax asthma has progressively gotten worse, to the point we’ve started him on an inhaler. (Yes, our cat is on an inhaler.) Thankfully he’s responding to treatment.

Waiting in line at Walmart takes just as long as it did in Louisiana   In other words, a LONG time.  I’m not talking 10 minutes but more like a half an hour.  Seriously.  Since Walmart does price matching everyone takes advantage, which in turn makes the check out process that long.  I have yet to go through a check out where no one requested a price match.  I have yet to take part in this craziness and tend to drive 10 extra minutes to head to another Walmart that is less busy.

I’m loving that we live so close to a Sprouts and Trader Joe’s.  Both are more natural grocery stores so it’s excellent to have so many options at hand.

We have gone from a democratic state to a republican state.  Every political sign and ad you see is republican.  But you can bet we’ve registered to vote. I will say no more about this and leave it at that.

Thanks to social media and the sport of running I’ve met some pretty rad people in our short time here.  In the past D and I tended to keep to ourselves, but one of my goals for this adventure was to reach out and meet new people.  I think we’ve been quite successful.

We absolutely love where we live.  We love that we’re in the suburbs but it’s decently populated with easy access to stores/restaurants.  No matter what direction I run I see mountains and they make me smile every time.  Unfortunately though, my drive to work takes 30 minutes each way and all of our friends live on the opposite side of the city.  Bummer, but we still love the area where we live and at this point see ourselves staying put during our time here in Arizona.

There seems to be an overabundance of yard sales in our area at all times.  In addition they post their signage in interesting ways, such as placing boxes in random locations.  I have a feeling this has to do with some random law about posting signs, but we find it quite interesting.

I’ve been bitten by the race running bug pretty badly.  With so many races to choose from and the ability to run through the winter without dealing with snow. I’ve had a lack of races over the past couple years for several reasons, so I’m in Heaven.  I’ve already completed one, am ready for the next month’s race, and have already signed up for the next half marathon (more to come about that Wednesday!) Now, if I could just have an unlimited income to register for them all.  Any brands want to sponsor me? =)

Running is way harder than I expected out here.  The first month was hell.  It has gotten better but I still feel like I have a long way to go.

We’ve successfully started adventuring and hope to do even more as the time goes on.

I don’t think there’s a Arizonian accent, but people definitely notice my midwestern accent and continuously ask where I’m from.

The price of gas is comparable to our hometown in Ohio.  Even better, the cheapest gas we’ve found in Phoenix is the gas station that’s closest to us, right up the street.  Just another positive point about our location.  This definitely helps with the amount of gas I using driving back and forth to work.  The station also serves as my pit stop on long runs too.  Bonus!

We have yet to find our dream jobs, but the good news is that we both have jobs.  With that being said, D is playing with an established band, heading to the studio soon to record, and is making some decent strides toward his dream.  As for me, I’m still trucking along.  Although I would love to work in social media/marketing in some way I’m still not 100% sure what my dream job is, but everyday I think I’m getting just a little closer.  In the meantime we’re surviving.  It won’t be easy, but going after your dreams rarely is.

‘Poo Free – Update 7 Months

6

It’s been 7+ months since I’ve gone ‘poo free. In that time I’ve also gone back to eating cooked food. Has it affected the greasiness of my hair? Did I ever find something to use for shaving?  Am I even still ‘poo free??

No ‘Poo, Week 2

0

As of tomorrow I will be shampoo free for 2 weeks.  So far I have no complaints, however I thought I’d share my observations….

My hair seems thicker.  When I told David this he said, “Well, duh. It’s going to be thicker with the oil.” I guess that makes sense, but I didn’t expect it to have volume.  I thought it was just going to be like a wet mop with oil…flat and no life.  My current job doesn’t require me to have a fantastic appearance, so I’ve been able to “wash” (with water) and go.  With that being said, that’s what I’ve been doing most days.  However, I have done my hair several times, meaning dry and style, and have had no problems.  No hair products have been required.  I’ve been able to maintain my usual hair volume and it goes/stays where I want it to.  To be quite honest I think it looks like same as when I was using ‘poo, when styled. The first several days I used lemon juice, but now I’m just using water.

So, does it smell?  After the first few days I asked David to take a whiff.  He said it did smell pretty oily, but he could only smell me if he put his nose directly to my hair.  Later last week (just after 1 week no ‘poo) he took a whiff again.  He said it had gotten better.  So we’re moving in the right direction.

How about my skin?  I’ve read where people’s faces and backs have broken out after going ‘poo free.  My back is perfectly fine.  That’s no surprise given I’ve never had the issue.  The skin on my face is a bit bumpy.  I’ve never had perfect complexion, but it does seem more broken out.  My understanding is that will pass.  I’ve removed overt fats (fats that you can see…think avocados and nuts) from my diet for the near future in hopes that this will help with the transition.  I have continued a low fat raw vegan lifestyle throughout the entire past 2 weeks and plan to continue to do so long-term.

I wish I could say I’m 100% product free….hopefully someday.  As of now I am still using coconut oil for my legs and a Thai stone for deodorant.  After several days of not using shower gel on my legs to shave, I had to give in.  The skin was flaking off of my legs following showers.  So I’m back to the drawing board for another option.  Given we are currently in the summer months I can only imagine how it would be if I tried to shave without gel/cream/something in the winter months. I have cut back in major ways with my lotion and chapstick usage.  I only use them about 1-2 times a day, which is huge!  I was pretty addicted to those two items.  Believe it or not it hasn’t been hard, especially when I don’t think about it.

That’s where I am!  I’m happy with everything so far and don’t see myself going back to ‘poo anytime soon.

Be grateful and keep smiling =)

Day 2 – No ‘Poo

3

In my attempt to remove chemicals and unnecessary items from my use, 2 days ago I stopped using shampoo. From my research everyone has different experiences with this. Some have no problems,  whereas others fight a greasy head of hair for a month or so. In the end, everyone has said that it’s worth it. Having a low fat raw vegan lifestyle should help my situation.

I’m anxious to see what happens. So far things aren’t too bad. My face feels fine but I will admit I have that greasy head feeling. Personally I don’t think the smell is obvious, but when I asked David to get close and take a whiff he said there is a greasy smell :/

From research I’ve seen some people use baking soda and/or lemon juice while in transition.  I decided to try a little lemon juice today.  I don’t know if it really helped or did anything.

To clarify, I am still washing my hair, but with straight water. In addition, I am also not using any hair products and allowing my hair to air dry.

I’m hoping I can tolerate the transition and think it will be worth in in the end.

Be grateful and keep smiling =)

Kidney Stone Update

0

I had my 6 month check up with my urologist today. I can’t help but feel that I failed. You may ask, how can you fail a check up with a doctor? I have no idea, but I feel I did.

Number 1 – According to a test I’m not producing enough urine. In other words I’m not intaking enough fluids to flush the kidneys. My doctor said the number 1 reason in the US for kidney stones = dehydration. And I’m the poster child for that model. Great. I’ve tried to up my fluid intake with always having water/lemonade with me at work and using straws. Unfortunately my type of work isn’t the best situation to be drinking all the time. Not only the drinking, but visiting the can too. I’ll try to work on it.

Number 2 – In the past my stones have never been seen on radiograph, only by cat scan (there were approximately 2 in the kidney last scan). This time? Yep, one of the stones is showing on the radiograph. It’s either that or I have arthritis on my ribs. I wouldn’t put it past my body about having another problem, but chances are I don’t have arthritis in my ribs…yet. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing that it’s now seen on radiograph….but in my mind I think it is. My thinking….if it’s visible on radiograph, it’s larger than last time.

Number 3 – I’m currently on potassium citrate to inhibit the formation of stones. My citrates used to be really low, so we started supplementing. After 6 months of supplementing my citrates have risen. However, not enough. So now I’ll be on 2 tablets 3 times a day. Not real fun. It’s not a big deal, just a hassle to remember sometimes. In addition, more pills means more money.

So that’s my visit in a nutshell. Time to kick it into gear with more hydration and more potassium citrate, then I get to do it all over again in 6 months.
